Poetic Writing - Year 4&5 - James

We have been learning how to take our ideas and simple sentences and craft them into great poetic writing.
Year 4-5
LI:
We will turn our 7 sentences into a poem
SC:
We will be successful if we use:

  • parts of speech (adverbs and adjectives)
  • Alliteration (dark, dusty, dirt or Sitting on sparkly soil)
  • at least one simile (like a stick insect or like a weak crumbling old post)
  • at least 1 onomatopoeia (swoosh, swish, buuuuzzzz, pft or whooooo)
We work together if we need help choosing the best place to break a line for effect

James has really enjoyed finding synonyms for simple words he thought of first.   What do you picture when you read James's poem?

I am jaggy, colossal yet also incisive
Moss looks like jade
I’m exterior to the school boundary
I’m solitary
My hair goes wht-eesh like a whip
I am stalled here in one discolouration
Aloof like an inattentive bore

Poetic Writing - Year 6-8 - Jessica G

AO: We understand why we are writing - what's the purpose - and can shape/craft our ideas with effect
LI: We will choose the most effective Poetic Devices to help craft our visual image/poem
SC: We will use -
  • sophisticated parts of speech (pronouns, adverbs, adjectives, and prepositions)
  • Simile and.or metaphor
  • Repetition
  • Enjambment
The Fern

In the bush the ferns grow where green and brown colours swallow the mush

In the bush I am as big as a ruby ball

which means I’m quite small

In the bush with rough and delicate leaves I shall rip quite easily

In the bush I am a curvy triangle, like the leaves, the flax and sometimes the trees

While I blow in the breeze the bush talks, my fury stalk extends, I may not have many jobs,

But I love to represent New Zealand with each leaf I grow

5000 years old

The tree was dark brown like dark chocolate
The trunk is rough like a brick

It twists and spreads out and attaches to another tree

The leaves are sparkly,

bright green

The tall, towering  tree is is rock hard

The  bees buzzzzz   in  the  leaves

One of my best objects
it makes a swoosh swish swoosh
like the ocean
and blends in with nature
it feels fragile
it is dark, dirty, and dusty
the leaves get made in many different ways

Kendell Writing - Discussion

In Term 1 we were learning how to craft a discussion about the pros and cons of two ideas.
We used a template to help us organise and write our ideas.
We worked on smaller parts each day then at the end we took our writing out of the boxes and WOW! We were amazed by what we had written.
We had to have 1 topic idea per paragraph; state if it was a pro or con; join ideas with and OR so; and explain our point using 'because'.
Here is Kendell's work comparing to her asttle from the start of the year.

What are the best  shoes for   walking in  summer, jandals or sneakers?

Both sneakers and  Jandals  Are All   right     foot wear.  there  are  good  and bad  aspects  to both of these Types  of  foot   wear.  I will discuss the pros and cons of  wearing either jandals or sneakers.

Primarily jandals are  Great  For  Walking  on  The   beach  because  they Can  Get  wet and  they  don't trap  sand in them.  Furthermore jandals are good for using in muddy puddles because they can be cleaned easily.  However jandals are not great  for  running  in and  hold  because When your  walking you can slip because they only have 2 straps to hold you feet in and they are soft and rubbery.

Primarily Sneakers are good for running in or when you have sports Because… In addition sneakers are Good For Walking in because sneakere have laces and hold your foot in properly.  However Sneakers are Not good On The  beach  because They Get Soaking Wet and the sand get s stuck in them and rubs your feet and makes cuts.

In conclusion jandals are a better shoe to wear at the beach then sneakers because its ok if they can get wet and you just rinse the sand out   You can get them on and off really easy too. Sneakers get wet and are uncomfortable when the sand rubs on your skin.  But sneakers protect your feet and are good for sports becasue they hold you feet in good and have strong soles.

What’s The best pets, cats or dog?

People all over the world have cats and dogs as pets.  Some people like Cats more and some people  like Dog.  I will discuss.  The pros and cons of having a cat or dog as a pet.

Primarily Cats are good at catching mice because if you have food in your  cupboards the mice will eat it but if you have cats its good so mice will not be around to eat it.  Furthermore cats are    good  at  climbing trees because they have cloers to spike in trees. so they can sit up there with you if you clib trees.  However ...

Primarily dog are good at boeing kman's from it ona. In addition dogs can become Haner because by practicing and Hunting ...and they get better and  Better at it.  Although some dogs are not good pets because they bitt people usually on the ami and it can be serious.

In conclusion dog are not good because they are probably going to bitt people on the ami. But I think Dogs are good because they  can be trained to be a good Dog. Cats are good at killing rats and mice because they have shape claws.  So you won’t have them running around your house.

What are the best shoes to wear in summer, Jandals or Sneakers?

Both sneakers and jandals are alright footwear. There are good and bad thing to both of these types of footwear. I will discuss the pro’s and con’s of wearing either of these shoes in summer.

Primarily jandals are great  at the beach because you can get your feet wet and don’t trap sand.  Furthermore jandals are easy to get on because they do not have laces.  However jandals are horrible for tramping because they will fall off because they only have two straps.

Primarily Sneakers are good for running in because they have good grip for if you slip.  In addition Sneakers are good for stopping snubbed toes because they fully protect your feet.   However sneakers are horrible for wearing at the beach because they fill up with sand and it is hard to get it out.

In conclusion sneakers are good for tramping in because they have good grip and support, and jandals are great for at the beach because you can get your feet wet and they don’t trap sand and they are easy to get on.

What’s best pet, cats or dog?

People all over the world have cats and dogs as pets. Some people like cats and some people like dogs.  I will discuss the pros and cons of having a cat or a dog.

Primarily cats are good because they are snuggly and they are great to sleep with.  Furthermore cats are great because they are very little, and cats can climb trees. However cats can be terrible pets because they spray all over the hals and it sticks

Primarily dogs are gaet because if you throw a stick the dog cod go and get it and bring it back. In addition dogs are great because they listen to you if you train them well.  Although dogs can be terbil pets because they sticking so

In conclusion cats are good pets to have  because they are little and snuggly. Dogs are great because they follow you.

Global day of design: A home for superheros : )

I was learning about Design process, creating to a brief and creating from a design.

I chose to create a Hidden retreat for Superheroes.

I followed my design exactly and didn't find I had to make any changes.

My School Minecraft Rollercoaster Activity

I was learning about Design process, creating to a brief and creating from a design.

I chose to create the Ultimate Rollercoaster.  It's a bit of a trick ending because the cart returns the way it came and I have some really tight turns.  The G-force may be slightly heavy there.

I will add a copy of my design for you to compare.  Mine was like Kurt's and our older computers wouldn't do screencastify or some other options we tried out so we videoed it normally.

I will add a copy of my design for you to compare.  I think my track worked out the way I pictured it in my mind and when I drew it out. Our older computers wouldn't do screencastify or some other options we tried so we just videoed it the old school way.

Our Global Day of Design #GDD17

GLOBAL DAY OF DESIGN 💭

This year we took part in the Global Day of Design on the 2nd of May.
We tried out some design challenges from John Spencer's youtube channel.  We focused on creative designs that would still fit the brief and were detailed enough for others to understand our ideas.

Because we're in New Zealand we got to the 2nd of May a bit before some of the other countries/schools who took part.  This meant we had a bit of extra time which we used to bring our ideas to 'life' following as exactly as we could to our design.  We had to share how our design fitted the brief and how our creation matched our design.

Sometimes we noticed that one of our design ideas wouldn't work out in reality and we had to make changes.

Check out some of our photos here https://goo.gl/photos/d5UaPqJxWczcwZVf8
Keep an eye out for some of our videos too.
