2018 Ski Trip - Porters

Aerodrome Visit 2018

Last week we headed off to Greymouth for a Visit to the Aerodrome as part of our Senior learning about Flight.

Cheryl the instructor, and Pete the Club Secretary hosted us for the morning with lots of information, a chance to sit in the aircraft, watching a local amphibious plane take off and land and a chance to put our aerodynamic knowledge to the test by making a paper plane that would fly the farthest.

We really appreciated the time Cheryl and Pete put into the visit - THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Do any of you know what the Callsigns for the 3 aircraft are?  Let us know in the comments below.

Sticking With Pigs - Film Trailer

Last term we joined the NZReadaloud for Year 7-8 and the novel was Sticking with Pigs by Mary-anne Scott. One of our final tasks was to plan and produce a Film trailer. A big thanks to our class Teacher Aide Mr Maunder for your help! We'd definitely recommend reading the story - it's a good one!

Book Character Day 2018

Jess B and Kurt organised a Book Character Day for us at the end of Term 3.  It was the first book character day we have had at our school for at least 8 years, probably longer!!!

Everyone loved dressing up and I think we can safely say this is an event that everyone wants to have again next year!  We had games, a parade and prizes for dressing up the most like your character or putting in heaps of effort.

Can you pick who our characters are?  Can you spot our Teacher, Miss J???
Let us know in the comments section : )

Wheels Day 2018

At the end of last term some of our seniors were busy organising sustainable school events for us to enjoy as part of earning their Paparoa Ranger Badges (Gold, Silver or Bronze).
You can read more about the Badges on our class site HERE and click on the page at the top.

Wil organised a Wheels Day, and even though it was a bit damp, we still go out there and enjoyed the day!

Lucky for us a truck delivering sand for our long jump pit got stuck on our field and had to dump off most of the sand on the field.  It turns out it was an awesome place to build jumps!

Term 3

We hope you've all had a good break and got to do some things you enjoy!  We've got a bit on this term like skiing, Hockey, Netball, Bush skills, Wheels Day and a few other events as well.
We'd like to welcome Victor to our class as well.  Victor is a Year 7 and he's fitted right in (it was his birthday today too and he brought CAKE which is always a winner for us).
Let us know what things you're doing at your school this term.

Well last term we did this art with tints and shades and WALA how we can change colour with white and black.  We had to use 4 scoops of an ice cream to show the different colours.  Our second from the bottom had to be our main colour, then we did 1 darker and then it was tricky but we had to mix 2 lighter shades for the top two but they had to be the lightest one at the top.  We had hole punched paper for the sprinkles and then our teacher gave us a cherry to stick on the very top.

We've FINALLY finished our Art

Last term we started learning about TINTS and SHADES which is when you change colour by adding only white or black.  The Year 4 and 5's did Ice-cream Art and the Year 6-8's used paint charts to help them create a mosaic fruit which we framed up and we think they're really awesome.  Let us know what you think in the comments : )

Rock climbing with Tai Poutini Polytech

Last week we headed off to Punakaiki with TPP students doing Outdoor Recreation.  We get to go with them for their practice with Clients days.
It was an awesome spot for Rock Climbing.  Some of us had done it before last year at Charleston but some of us hadn't done any before.  We climbed pretty hard out for the whole day and there were a few sore muscles the next day.  The next day we watched this video about Alex Honnold the American climber who Free soloed up El Capitain, and we were like Oh Wow!  We had these big holes and we felt like we didn't have a good grip then you see him and he's just got his finger tips in this tiny wee dent in the rock face!!! AMAZING!  A HUGE THANKS to TPP as well!

Blog of the Week (last week actually)

Our blog of the week is REBECCA!
Rebecca is a Year 4 and has just started in Ruma Waru this year.  She is learning so many things to help her be in a 1:1 digital class with her own chromebook for learning.  Rebecca managed herself and got the jobs done she needed to so she could share work on her blog.  She has her background picked, photo and About me done plus her learning about writing.

Google Draw when you progress past stick figures

The seniors have been challenging themselves to create work that sets them apart from anyone in Ruma Waru who is not a Year 7 or 8 (everyone else). We looked at visual work we produce using GAFE and played around with ways we can use the tools in Google Draw in a more sophisticated way. We choose an image we quite liked and set about trying to re-create it with as much authenticity as possilbe using Google Draw. Here's our results (still working on them). Let us know if you've tried this before or if you have any other ideas that can help us.

Our creative mornings

One of our School Values is Creativity - we use it to help us think about problems a different way, try things again, accept others ideas, and share ideas with others for a better solution.
In the mornings the Senior students (Year 6-8) have time to get some creative ideas flowing and we share them back with comments and presentations.  We really liked Regan's idea for the week 8 'What are they thinking in their head?'  Regan's idea was classic Lionel Ritchie.
Here is some of the things we do and then a slide of our work.
Let us know if you try any of these in your class, or what you do to start the day.

Oh my! Is it week 8 already?

We've been fairly busy in our class, helping new Year 4 students learn how we do things in Ruma Waru.  We're all getting lots of practice at tolerance.

Year 4's have been learning how to use devices for the first time and we've been using all the GAFE.  Year 4's have also been learning that good writing can take time and we can go back and improve our work and our buddies can have ideas that help us.
We used google slides to present our Description writing and illustrations.  We then went and read them to the Juniors in Room 7 and got their feedback as the audience for our stories.

Here are a few for you to read.
